Frequently Asked Questions

What is cohousing, and how is it different from a typical condo or apartment building?
Cohousing is an intentional community centered around shared values and with a mission of fostering deep connection and collaboration among neighbors. They consist of private condo homes connected by shared common spaces such as shared kitchens, gardens and recreational areas. Unlike traditional condos or apartment buildings, cohousing encourages active participation in community life. It’s about creating a neighborhood where people know and care for one another, while still enjoying the privacy and independence of their own homes.
Will I still have privacy? What if I’m worried that living in “community” will feel overwhelming?
In cohousing, members can choose the balance between community and privacy that works for them. Each condo is a fully equipped private home, offering plenty of space for solitude and downtime. Participation in group events is entirely optional, there’s no pressure to join every activity. At the same time, members are encouraged to bring their own passions and interests into the community. Whether it’s starting a book club, hosting game nights or sharing your love of crafting, you’re welcome to help shape the community and make it feel like your home.
Do I own my condo home at Washington Commons?
Yes, you do! Each member at Washington Commons owns their own private condo, just like in a traditional condominium. Each condo is a fully self-sufficient space with everything you need, including your own private kitchen, bathroom, and hookups for your own washing machine and dryer. In addition, you’ll have access to shared spaces, including a communal kitchen, a generous terrace with garden spaces and the Common House for gatherings and group activities.
What kinds of events or gatherings does the community have?
There’s always something happening at Washington Commons. Our Social Team organizes Snack & Schmooze every Friday night. The last Friday of each month, we host a joint celebration for all of the birthdays that month! We also host monthly potlucks, alternating between brunches and dinners, creating regular opportunities to share a meal and connect.

Movie Night happens every Sunday, often with fun themed nights. Residents also enjoy regular shared meals, casual coffee meetups, and spontaneous hangouts like “dog nights” on the terrace, where neighbors gather to relax while the pups play.

Beyond our building, members often head into town together to attend local events and take in the culture of West Sacramento. Whether planned or impromptu, there are plenty of ways to connect and enjoy life together, both at home and out in the city.

How does Washington Commons handle conflict while maintaining good relationships and a strong sense of neighborliness?
Cohousing is a community of people, and just like any community, conflict will occasionally arise. In cohousing, members take a collaborative approach to conflict resolution that allows everyone to feel heard and understood. People may differ in their opinions or ideas, and that diversity is part of any healthy community!  But beneath those differences lies a foundation of shared values: cooperation, respect, and mutual support. It’s those values that guide members as they work through challenges together to find a resolution.
How does the Washington Commons Homeowners Association work, and how much time will I be expected to invest in it?
We use a consensus decision-making model, which is built on the principle of equality: every voice matters, and decisions move forward only with full group consent. While active participation is encouraged, members aren’t required to attend every meeting. Each person can choose the level of involvement that feels right for them, striking a balance between individual autonomy and shared responsibility.

Is Washington Commons accessible for people with mobility challenges?
Yes, Washington Commons is fully accessible for people with mobility challenges. We strive to ensure our space is accessible and inclusive for all.
How do communal meals work, and can my dietary needs be accommodated?
At Washington Commons, we want everyone to feel welcome and included, especially around the shared table. Our community meals are potluck-style and family style (with 1 - 3 cooks preparing the meal) so the effort is shared and no one is responsible for doing it all. We’re mindful of allergies and dietary restrictions, and members communicate openly so everyone can plan accordingly. Over time, members become comfortable cooking for a crowd, and meals feel more like a relaxed gathering than a big production.
How are shared spaces maintained, and who is responsible for cleaning or upkeep?
The community is self-managed, so the role of keeping shared spaces tidy is shared among neighbors, with professionals being brought in as needed.
Are pets allowed at Washington Commons?
Yes, pets are allowed at Washington Commons! We can’t wait to meet your furry (or feathery, or scaly) friends.
Is there a space where guests can stay overnight?
Yes, we have two comfortable guest suites available for your out-of-town visitors. Each suite includes a queen-size bed, and one also features a pull-out twin bed for additional sleeping space.
